The Beginning

The point of this blog is to discuss, hopefully in an interactive way, what it takes to build a high school literary magazine from beginning to end. This blog will be updated weekly, but I will not promise a blogging schedule.
Feel free to add comments about our topics and posts, but be aware that I am moderating the comments.
I hope that this site will be just one resource for other publication advisers around the country.

Hello to you, the reader.

In the world of student journalism, there seems to be a shortage of information and resources for the literary arts magazine genre. That is where this blog comes in. We intend for this to be an arena for those of us in the lit mag publication business to share ideas and to spread the word. We do not profess to have all of the answers, just ideas and trials that worked (or didn’t) for our situation over the years.

We hope that this blog may continue to grow and be found useful. We are always interested in collaboration. If you see something on here that you can use, go for it. Let us know how it worked. If you see something that you disagree with or think is wrong, speak up. We hope to learn as much from you as you might learn here.

About the Authors

Robert Hankes, English Teacher, has helped advise the editors of Charisma, the Big Spring HS literary magazine, for going on 17 years. While there he helped the magazine develop into one of the finest magazines in the state, winning a number of Pennsylvania School Press Association GOLD awards, and a few Keystone-Allstate awards. The magazine has done well in CSPA, NCTE and NSPA evaluations. Mr. Hankes received an Outstanding Teacher award from the Shippensburg University School Study Council in 2006, and is a finalist in the 2008 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year program. His only vice is his increasing obsession with Shakespeare.

Michael McVitty, Art Teacher, was brought on as a second adviser for Charisma in 2005. In his short tenure with the magazine he has primarily advised the layout and look of the magazine. His expertise is with InDesign and all things Macintosh. One of his vices would be everything that Apple releases needs to be bought.

Terminology

2-Up- Register size where 2 pages are printed on either side of a sheet of paper. This yelds 4 pages per sheet of paper (4 consecutive pages in the publication).
4-Up- Register size where 4 pages are printed on either side of a sheet of printer paper. This yelds 8 pages per sheet of paper (8 consecutive pages in the publication).
8-Up- Register size where 8 pages are printed on either side of a sheet of paper. This yeilds 16 pages per sheet of paper (16 consecutive pages in the publication).
CMYK- (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) The four colors used in off-set printing printing.
Duotone- Photoshop technique that limits the image colors to Black plus one color.
Folio- Information including page number, section name, publication name, and/or a design that appears on a page or spread
Perfect Binding- A type of binding that binds the registers with glue and includea a wrap-around cover
Register- A group of pages that are printed and bound together. Multiple registers are bound together to create a publication.
RGB- (Red, Green, Blue) The three colors used on a computer screen or television screen
Spread- Two pages that face each other in a publication.
Staple Binding- A simple type of binding there the pages are folded into a single regester stapled at the center.
